COCONUT CHUTNEY WITH RED CHILLIES

Coconut chutney with Red chillies
Chutney - A breakfast in a South Indian home will always have Idli accompanied with a Chutney. There are enormous array of Chutney's and the most versatile one is the coconut chutney . We have lots of variation in this chutney. The most commonly prepared chutney with coconut is grinding along with the green chillies. Next comes the chutney grinded with coconut and red chillies and here comes the recipe :)
For this chutney you need

4 tbsp. of fresh grated coconut
6-7 red chillies (adjust acc. to your taste)
2 tbsp.  of roasted chana dal (pottukadalai)
4-5 small onions
Salt

For tempering

1 tsp. of mustard and urad dal
A sprig of curry leaves

Preparation

In the blender, add the coconut and red chillies , gind them.

Now add roasted chana dal, small onion, salt add water little by little and grind it to a thick, smooth paste.

Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seed, when they stop spluttering add urad dal and curry leaves.

Finally add the tempered ingredients in the chutney

Coconut chutney with red chillies is ready to be served..........

Serve it with hot idli's and enjoy :)

Note:

Always make sure the coconut , you use is fresh, dessicated coconut cannot be used here.

I have added small onions , it gives a different taste to this chutney, you can skip this if you want.

Sometimes I also add a small piece of ginger to both types of chutney, grinded with green chillies and red chillies, this gives a nice flavor.
